There's a wonderful article in 'Road & Track's' 1998 August's edition, where Mario Andretti was asked to test some of the fastest street legal cars of the time...testing was held Fort Stockton's high speed oval in Texas - Mario readily accepted; 'sounds like fun', he said!

Description

The gathering consisted of the now legendary McLaren F1, a number of heavily modified Corvettes, a Hennessy Venom 600 Motorsport Viper, a Toyota Supra Turbo with HKS mods, a RUF CTR 2 and a bog standard Ferrari 550 Maranello.

You can guess which one was fastest; predictably the Woking boys left everybody standing but surprisingly Mario's overall nod went with the 550....he was enormously impressed with a stability and felt totally confident in the car. Further comment consisted of.....'as a front engined Ferrari, the 550 embodies what a modern Ferrari should be, an emotional car that is dynamically superb, aesthetically pleasing and utterly comfortable without being cushy'.

Certainly the current owner agreed with this sentiment and as a avid Classic Le Mans devotee the 550 was put to good use. Supplied by Reg Vardy in January 1999, this lovely 550 in Argento Nurburgring has been coveted by each successive owner over the last 18 years...further recognition of its exemplary condition is in the form of it being a multi Ferrari Owners' Club Concours entrant in 2009 & 2010, with an excellent second place in 2011. Cambelts and service carried out less than a year/1000 miles ago. Nothing to to do other than enjoy.

Last words I can attribute to Harry Metcalfe describing his ownership...." it's been better than good, its been magical. Its so usable."

It would be a pleasure to answer any further questions you might have. This Ferrari 550 Maranello can be inspected at my Guildford showroom - please call me directly on 07788 865700.
