The Carrera 2.7 MFI was the direct successor to the Carrera 2.7 RS and by a quirk of legislation were actually built in smaller numbers. Just 1,036 Coupe's and 433 Targa's were ever built, against a total production run of 1,580 for the original Carrera 2.7 RS. Least we not forget, they were also more expensive than there earlier brethren too!
Suspension and brakes are the same, although anti-roll bars are different sizes, as are the slightly flared rear wheel arches, where it's shod with very lovely 8' (215/60) & 7' (195/65) Fuch's. Lets-us not forget the lovely ducktail, arguably, the most-imitated, replicated and cloned Porsche body part in history!
Fun fact. Only four Porsche derivatives ever left the factory with a ducktail: 73 Carrera RS; 73 Carrera RSR; 74 IROC (albeit only temporarily); and of course, our car here being the 74 Carrera.
Turning now to this fabulous example:
According to Guy White of the Porsche Club GB there were apparently just 51 RHD 2.7 Carreras delivered to the UK: twenty three Coupes and fifteen Targa's in 1973/74 and in 1975 eleven Coupes and two Targa's.
Two other C16 UK RHD spec cars were delivered to Germany, this car we now offer for sale and one other given to music mogul Micky Most by Sony Records, which was modified with Turbo/3.0 RS bodywork and converted by Kremer.
This RHD 2.7 Carrera was ordered and delivered by Porsche, Düsseldorf in early November 1973 to an English officer we understand was serving in Germany. Evidently he was a Porsche enthusiast, as it really was the ultimate driver's specification for this new G series model....non-sunroof Coupe with limited slip diff, no electric windows, leather interior, black anodized trim, and metallic silver (Z272) paint.
Logically, it would seem that this chap was then posted to Hong Kong as the car was exported there during 1976. Ultimately the Carrera changed hands over there and it ended up being bought by a Mr. Haller in the late 80's who we know from the paper work exported it to England in 1991. Fortunately the car retained its original engine, as in order to get an export license, this is pre requisite in Hong Kong.
Once back in UK it changed hands a few times in the South West of England with the current owner stumbling upon the car in 2010 and fortunately quickly realising it wasn't just any old 911!
His intention was simply to tidy the car up and have some fun, but over time, as the values increased, the decision was taken to take on the challenge and restore it.
The late Tony Outridge (ex Autofarm) was approached as he knew these particular cars really well and was instrumental in sourcing very difficult to find parts that are unique to this model, that had disappeared over the 40 years, plus ultimately helping in getting the Carrera restored fastidiously by all the right people.
Historika undertook the body restoration and did an exemplary job being rebuilt on a Celette jig and incorporating NOS floors and four new wings from Porsche.
Tony Outridge was then responsible for fitting and offering everything up to the repainted body. Very sadly during the latter stages of his involvement he sadly passed away.
Neil Bainbridge restored the MFI pump. The 915 mag case gearbox was rebuilt by Porsche Hatfield.
RSR Engineering rebuilt the engine and fitted the new LSD and latterly took over the reins from Tony and ultimately completed the project during 2024.
The new interior trim in the correct pigskin midnight blue leather was supplied by Southbound, as well as the correct spec blue carpets and ivory headlining. A custom made new complete wiring loom was provided by Kroon in the Netherlands.
As you can imagine the whole rebuild was hugely time consuming and latterly massively disrupted by Covid too. Nevertheless, the final outcome is a beautifully and professionally restored 911 which exactly matches its factory Certificate of Authenticity.
